Objective To investigate the acute toxicity and potential mutagenicity of a microbial flocculant. Methods The mouse acute oral toxicity test, Ames test and bone marrow polychromatic erythrocyte micronucleus test were carried out on microbial flocculants. Results In mouse acute oral toxicity test, LD50 was higher than 5000 mg/(kg BW). Compared to the negative control group, the treatment group showed an absence of mutagenicity in the Ames test, and no dose-response relationship. No significant difference among testing groups and negative control group was found in mouse bone marrow poly chromatic erythrocyte micronucleus test. Conclusion The microbial flocculant shows non-toxic effects in mouse acute test, has no sign to indicate a reverse mutation in Ames test, and has no potential capacity to induce micronucleus formation in mouse bone marrow polychromatic erythrocyte.
