Abstract:Despitethenon-contactunderwaterexplosionphenomena(UNDEX)havebeenstudiedfordecadesandseveralnumericalmethodshavebeenproposedinliterature,itseffectsonmilitarystructures,especiallycompositeones,areevennowadaysmatterofresearch.Inearlydesignphases,itisnotalwayspossibletoverifytheshockresistanceofhullstructuresmodellingthewholephenomenon,inwhichfluid,gasandsolidpropertiesmustbeproperlysetinafullycoupledfluid-structureinteraction(FSI)numericalmodel.Theseonesareextremelycomplextoset,computationallydemandingandcertainlynotsuitableforeverydaydesignpractice.Inthispaper,asimplifiedfiniteelement(FE)model,easytouseinanearlydesignphase,isproposed.Both,thestructureandthefluidaresimulated.Inthisapproximation,thefluidbehaviourissimplified,usingspecialfiniteelements,availableinacommercialsoftwareenvironment.Thischoicereducesthecomputationaltimeandnumericaleffortsavoidingtheproblemofcombiningcomputationalfluiddynamics(CFD)andFEdomainsandequationsinafullycoupledfluid-structureinteractionmodel.Atypicalparallelbodyblockofaminesweeperismodelled,usingtwo-dimensionalmulti-layeredshellelementstoproperlyaccountforthecompositematerialsbehaviour.Forthefluidinstead,threedimensionalvolumetricelements,directlycoupledtothestructuralelements,areplaced.Inaddition,thesamecalculationisperformed,modellingseparatelyfluidintheCFDenvironmentandstructuresinthefiniteelementone.Thus,realizingafullycoupledfluid-structureinteractionmodel.Theresultsobtainedbyapplyingbothnumericalmodelsarecomparedwiththestructuralresponsemeasuredonboardofacompositeshipduringafull-scaleshocktest.Thesimplifiedproposedprocedureprovidesresultsinsatisfactoryagreementwithexperiments,allowingthevalidationofthemodel.ApproximationsarediscussedanddifferenceswiththerealphenomenonandfullycoupledCFD+FEmethodareshown,providingabetterunderstandingofthephenomena.Eventually,themodellingstrategyhasbeenconsideredavaluableandcost-effectivetoolfortheconceptandpreliminarydesignofcompositestructuressubjecttounderwaterexplosions.
