Abstract:Thispapernumericallyevaluatestheeffectofthecrackpositionontheultimatestrengthofstiffenedpanels.Imperfectionssuchasnotchesandcracksinagedmarinestiffenedpanelscanreducetheirultimatestrength.Toinvestigatetheeffectofcracklengthandposition,aseriesofnonlinearfiniteelementanalyseswerecarriedoutandtwocaseswereconsidered,i.e.,case1withthinstiffenersandcase2withthickstiffeners.Inbothcases,thestiffenershavethesamecross-sectionarea.Tohaveabasisforcomparison,theintactpanelsweremodeledaswell.Thecracksandnotcheswereinthelongitudinalandtransversedirectionandwereassumedtobeinthemiddlepartofthepanel.Thecracksandnotcheswereassumedtobethroughthethicknessandthereisneithercrackpropagationnorcontactbetweencrackfaces.Basedonthenumericalresults,longitudinalcracksaffectthebehaviorofthestiffenedpanelsinthepostbucklingregion.Whenthestiffenersarethinner,theybucklefirstandprovidenoreservedstrengthafterplatebuckling.Thus,cracksinthestiffenersdonotaffecttheultimatestrengthinthecaseofthethinnerstiffeners.Generally,whenstiffenersarethicker,theyaffectthepostbucklingbehaviormore.Inthatcase,cracksinthestiffenersaffectthebucklingandfailuremodesofthestiffenedpanels.Theeffectofnotchwasalsostudied.Incontrasttothelongitudinalcrackinstiffeners,anotchinthestiffenersreducestheultimatestrengthofthestiffenedpanelforbothslenderandthickstiffeners.
