Abstract：ThisarticleexploresthehistoricalevolutionoftheChineseconceptof"engineering"anditsdevelopmenttrajectoryintheglobalcontext.Itbeginswithacleardefinitionofthecoreconceptofengineering-asystemofproductsthathumansusenaturalresourcestoachieveestablishedgoalsthroughlaborandcontinuousmanagement.Itthenanalyzesthescarcityofancientengineering-relatedliteratureandtheshiftinunderstandingoftheconceptofengineeringinmodernChina.Thefulltextisdividedintoseveralcoreparts.Firstly,ittracestheoriginandevolutionoftheword"engineering"inancientChina,explainsitsmultiplemeaningsinancientChinese,andrevealstheprocessofthegradualclarificationoftheconceptof"engineering"inthelateQingDynasty.Secondly,itdiscussestheintroductionoftheWesternconceptof"engineering"anditsroleinpromotingmodernChineseindustrializationprocess,withaparticularfocusontheestablishmentofthe"JiangnanManufacturingBureau"andthetranslationandpublicationofengineeringandtechnologybooks.Next,thearticleelaboratesontheevolutionoftheChineseengineers'understandingofengineeringconcepts.EspeciallyduringtheperiodoftheReformMovementandtheNewDealinthelateQingDynasty,withtheintroductionandconstructionofnewfactories,theimportanceofengineeringknowledgebecameincreasinglyprominent.Amongthem,theoutstandingcontributionsofthefirstgenerationofengineerssuchasZhanTianyouhaveattractedmuchattention.Theynotonlyconstantlyexploredinpractice,butalsoactivelypromotedtheconstructionofengineeringdisciplinesandthecultivationofengineeringtalentsinChina.Inaddition,thearticlealsomentionedtheestablishmentofengineeringsocietiesandthefoundingofthemagazine"Engineering",whichplayedacrucialroleinpromotinganddeepeningtheconceptofengineering.ByanalyzingthepracticeandtheoreticaldevelopmentofmodernChineseengineering,itshowedthetrajectoryoftheconceptof"engineering"inmodernChinesesocietyanditsprofoundimpactonsocialdevelopment.ThisarticleprovidesuswithauniqueperspectivetointerpretthesocialchangesinmodernChinathroughadetailedtextualresearchonthehistoryoftheconceptof"engineering"inChineseandanin-depthreflectionontheindustrializationandtechnologicaldevelopmentinmodernChina.
