Naturalsunlightinducedrapidformationofwaterbornalgalbacterialgranulesinanaerobicbacterialgranularphotosequencingbatchreactor.pdf
Algal-bacterialgranularconsortiaareaggregatesofaerobicbacterialgranulesandthemicroalgae.Fastformationofalgal-bacterialgranuleswasstudiedsystematicallyinthepresentworkintermsofthegranulationprocess,mechanismsinvolvedandthecommunities.Anaerobicbacterialgranularsequencingbatchreactor(SBR)wasconfiguredundernaturallightexposure(12/12hoflight/darkregimes)andanextremelylowsettlingtimeof2minforspontaneousgranulation.Themorphologicalappearancesindicatedthatthereweretwomajorphasesforthegranulationperiods.Stepone(day1-3)witnessedabundantfilamentousbacteriabridgingwiththeinitialingwater-bornalgaeonthesurfaceofthegranules,andoverproductionofextracellularpolymericsubstances(especiallypolysaccharides(PS),tryptophan&protein-like,andhumicacid-likesubstances)wasobservedforbindingfunction.Steptwo(day4-7)experiencedthematurationofthespontaneousalgal-bacterialconsortia,whenthealgaegrewintotheinnersideofthegranules.Theyellowishaerobicbacterialgranulesturnedgreenonday3,andsoonbecamedarkgreenwhenthegranulesmaturedonday7.Thegrowthofthewater-bornalgaedecreasedthesettleability,meansizesofthegranules,butstimulatedthebioactivitythroughinteractionsbetweenalgaeandbacteria.Theovergrowthoffilamentousbacteriaandalgaesignificantlydecreasedthebiomassretentionintermsofbothmixedliquorsuspendedsludge(MLSS)andmixedliquorvolatilesuspendedsludge(MLVSS)duringthefirststage,whilestabilizedonstagetwo.SymbioticgrowthofalgaeoccurredduringgranulationprocessfortheincreaseofchlconcentrationsincludingChla,ChlbandtotalChl.Illuminaresultsrevealedthattheintroductionofalgaereducedtherichnessanddiversityofbacterialcommunity.Whereas,noobviousshiftsofthedominantgroupsatphylumandclasseslevelswerefound,thoughtheirrelativeabundanceschangedtodifferentdegrees.Incontrast,thenaturallyinitializedalgaeexperiencedthoroughdisplacefromDiatomeatogreenalgaeChlorophyceae.Thepresentworkshowedthespontaneousformationofalgal-bacterialcouldberapidlyachievedundernaturalsunlightirradiationbyseedingaerobicbacterialgranules.
