Thetopicalambiguityoftheterm"bridgingthegap"manifestsitselfinthe35.6kmlongHongkong-Zhuhai-MacaoBridge,presentlyunderconstruction,andinmultiscaleanalysisofa5.7kmlongtunnelbelowthebottomoftheSouthChinaSea,interruptingthebridgeforshipping.Ontheonehand,atopographicalgapisbeingbridgedwhile,ontheotherhand,severalordersofmagnitudeinmaterialmechanicsofconcretearebridgedbymeansofamodemmodeofstructuralanalysis.ThisisdoneintheframeworkofajointresearchprojectoftheInstituteforMechanicsofMaterialsandStructuresofViennaUniversityofTechnologyandtheDepartmentofGeotechnicalEngineeringofTongjiUniversity,Shanghai,entitledas"Bridgingthegapbymeansofmultiscalestructuralanalysis".Theaimofthisresearchprojectistoassesstheaddedvalueofthistimelymodeofstructuralanalysis.Selectedresultsofthisresearchinprogressarepresentedinthiscontribution.
