MakingpublictransportachoicemodeisoneofthethreekeystrategicthrustslistedinLandTransportMasterPlan(LTMP)Singapore.Toachievethat,itisimportanttomakethepublictransportsystemattractiveforusebythepublic.Oneofsuchapplicationidentifiedistoprovidesignalpriorityforbussesattrafficlightjunctions.TechnologyscanandassessmentofvariousdetectiontechnologieshaveindicatedthatRFIDistheappropriate,openstandardsandeconomicaltechnologyforthebuspriority.RFIDisawirelessnon-contactsystemthatusesradio-frequencyelectromagneticfieldstotransferdatafromatagattachedtoanobject,forthepurposesofautomaticidentificationandtracking.RFIDtagshasbeenwidelyusedinvariousindustries,includingtransportationforpaymentservicessuchasfortransitfares,highwaytollsandparkingfares,aswellasintheareasofvehicleidentificationandaccesscontrolinmanycountries.WhilethecostofRFIDtagshasdecreasedsignificantlyovertime,itsdetectioncapabilityhasalsoimprovedtoallowlongerrangedetections.Withthis,aconcertedinitiativebetweenthelocalauthoritiesandtheindustrytoconductatechnicaltrialfortrafficlightpriorityforbusesusingradiofrequencyidentificationtechnology(RFID)wasexecutedatselectedtestlocationsinSingapore.ThispaperdiscussesonthetechnicaltrialconductedtoassesstheaccuracyandreliabilityofBusPrioritySystemusingRFIDinprovidingtrafficlightpriorityforbusesinSingapore.
