KarstlandscapesarewidelydistributedanddifferentcharacteristicsaredisplayedindifferentregionsduetotheeffectofvariousnaturalenvironmentalfactorswhichoccurthroughoutChina.Buriedkarstcavernsystemscoveredbysandystrata,whicharewidelydistributedinGuangdongProvince,possessthefollowingfeatures:highfissurewatercontent,highrockpermeability,susceptibilitytocollapse,variabilityinshapeandanirregulardistribution.Whenashieldtunnelisconstructedinthiskindofenvironment,hazards,suchassinkholes,theingressofwaterorstones,anddamagetotheconstructedtunnelsmayoccur.Thus;karstcavesneedtobetreatedbeforetunnelconstruction.Socketdiaphragmwallsareusuallyadoptedtoretainsoilandtocut-offgroundwaterduringdeepexcavationsinGuangdongprovince,forthesafetyoftheexcavationandtoreducetheimpactonthesurroundings.However,geohazardsoftenoccurduringtheconstructionofdiaphragmwallsinkarstregions,causingproblemssuchasdiaphragmwallcollapse,waterormudingress,groundcollapseandlong-terminstability.Thispaperpresentsaprocedureforkarstcavetreatmenttomitigatepossiblehazardsduringshieldtunnellinginkarstregions.Theconstructionprocedureincludesfieldinvestigations,judgment,treatment,andeffectivenesschecks.
