Oneoftheobstaclesforheavy-dutyvehicleplatooningonpublicroadsisgivenbytheabsenceofEUlegislationonthistopic.Thisworkincludesapresentationtothemostinfluentialgroupsinvolvedindiscussingautonomousdrivingandtheirwork,whichhashadanimportantroleinsidetheEuropeanFP7fundedprojectCOMPANION.Then,anextensiveanalysisisperformedonthecurrentstateofEUandlocalrulesregardingautomateddriving,drivingtimeregulations,trafficregulations,andsafetyaspects.Theanalysisdoneisdividedinthreedifferentsubjects:vehiclesasindividualelementsregardingthesemiautonomousdriving,theuseofvehiclesandplatoonsasasystem,andtheuseoftheinfrastructureswheretheplatoonswillrun.Finally,somerecommendationstotheregulatoryframeworkaregivensoastodealwiththenewnecessitiesthathavebeendetectedandthathavebeencreatedalongtheCOMPANIONprojectduration.Themainconclusionthatcanbedrawnisthatmuchworkremainstobedone.Eventhoughthemainlineshavebeensta-blished,thefutureRegulationcontentisstillunderdiscussionandwillbestronglyinfluencedbythetechnicalevolutionofvehicles,themanufacturersthatjointhiskindofinitiativesortheauthorities'implicationinplatooningprojects.
