DuringsummermonthsthecityofShanghai,China,experiencesstormsurgesfromtheEastChinaSeaandhighdischargeintheYangtzeRiver.Owingtoclimatechange,theprobabilityoffloodswillincrease.Therefore,ShanghaimustbeprotectedfrombothYangtzeRiverandtheEastChinaSea.Thispaperexploresthefeasibility,conceptualdesignofconstructinga'closableopen'highdischargebarrierthatflood-proofstheShanghaiareaandtakesintoaccounttheneedsofnature.Thissystemwouldallowtidalflowduringnormalwaterlevelsandpreventfloodingduringhighwaterlevels.
