TheprimaryobjectiveofthisstudyistodevelopacoordinatedcontrolstrategythatcombinesRampMetering(RM)andVariableSpeedLimit(VSL)toreducesystemtraveltimeatfreewaymergebottleneckareas.Thecoordinatedstrategywasproposedtoachievetheoptimumcontroleffects,basedontheeffectsofRMandVSLonfreewaytrafficoperations.Theeffectsofvariouscontrolstrategieswerecomparedusingthemodifiedcelltransmissionmodel.Theimpactsoftrafficvariablesontheeffectivenessofvariouscontrolstrategieswereevaluated.TheresultsshowedthatthecoordinatedcontrolstrategyproposedinthisstudyoutperformedthesingleALINEA/QandthefeedbackVSLstrategyinreducingsystemtraveltimeofthefreewaysystem.Theimpactsoftrafficflowvariablesonthecontroleffectsofthecoordinatedstrategywerealsoevaluatedinthestudy.
