Thispaperpresentsatrapezoidmethodforoccupantrestraintsystemdesignanalysisbasedonoccupantride-downenergycontroltheory.Thesub-systemcharacteristicdeterminationofanoccupantrestraintsystemcouldbesimplifiedandanalyzedbyatwo-steptrapezoidenergycurvewhichisgeneratedfromride-downenergycontrolmethod.Theparameterdefinitionsresultedfromthetargettwo-stepresidualenergytrapezoidanalysisforsomecasestudieswereputintoanumericalmodelforvalidation.Occupantresponsesshowedverygoodagreementsbetweentheoutcomesbothfromtrapezoidanalysisandthenumericalsimulation.Intheconceptdesignphase,thismethodcouldbeusedtogivequickestimationsforrestraintsystemparametersbasedonoccupantinjurytarget,availablevehiclecrushspaceandinteriorsurvivalspacedesign,andprovidereliableinputsforsub-restraintsystemdesignandagoodreferencepointfortheinitialrestraintsystemlayout.
