ThispaperdescribesthedesignandconstructionofcosteffectivebridgesforSriLankanruralroads.Planning,estimationanddesignconsiderationsareexplained.Mostoftheruralroadscategorizedintoclass"C"and"D"inSriLankaroadmaparesituatedinmostdifficultterrainconditionswithhillcountryandsuburbs.DuringtheBritishcolonialera,theroadsconstructedtoaccessteaplantationsareoftheseroadsandthebridgesontheseroadsarewithpedestriancabletypeorsteelstructureswithnovehicularaccess.Duetothepresentdevelopmentthesebridgesaretobereplacedwithbridgesthatcanaccommodatevehicles.Consideringthedifficultyofmaterialtransportandterrainconditions,steelconcretecompositetypecosteffectivebridgesareproposedtoruralroadsandthoseareverymuchsuitableforsustainabledevelopmentonaffectedareas.Convenienceofmaterialtransport,erection,useoflocalmaterial,speedofconstructionandmostlythecosteffectivenessfortheprojectspromotedthesetypesofbridgesforruralroadsinSriLanka.Properdesignanddetailing,thecontractor'sabilityandtechnologicalknowhowandthecooperationwiththeClient-Contractorinadesignandbuiltcontractarealsoexplainedwithacasestudy.Itshouldbenotedthatalthoughthemethodsofanalysisoutlinedinthispapercanalsobeappliedtosimilartypeofbridges,butessentiallythebearingcapacityoftheparticularfoundation,hydrologicalinvestigationshavetobeinvestigatedaccordingly.
