AnalysisofFormationFracturingfortheMaxiHDDQinRiverCrossingProjectinChina.pdf
AnewirrigationpipelinewasinstalledusingtheHorizontalDirectionalDrilling(HDD)methodinordertoalleviatethewatershortagesituationinJiaozuoCity,HenanProvince,China.ThispipeinstallationprojectincludedtwoparallelHDDcrossings,withapipediameterof1016mmandadrivenlengthof1750mforbothofthem.Basedonthepreliminarydetailedgeologicalsurveyreportoftheriverbed,hydro-fracturingcontrolunderhighslurrypressurewouldbeabigchallengeforthisproject.Thispapersummarizesthepredictionmethodsforthemaximumallowablemudpressureintheboreholebasedondifferentmechanismsofformationfracturing.Basedonthegeologicaldataofthiscrossingproject,theDelftequationandanotherpredictionmethodbasedontensilefailure(termedheretheXiamethod)wereusedtocalculatethemaximumallowableannularpressure.Therealpumpingpressureofthisprojectwasrecordedbythecontractor.Bycomparingthetheoreticalpredictionsofallowablepressurewiththeactualpressuresforthehorizontalsectionoftheborehole,itindicatedthattheXiamethodisconservativeandthelimitsoftheDelftequationcouldnotbeverifiedinthisproject.Asasolutiondealingwithpotentialhydro-fracturing,finiteelementmodelingshownthatincreasingthegroundsurfaceloadwouldrisetheboreholeallowablepressureatwhichfracturingwouldoccur.Thissolutionwasusedtodealwithablow-outintheentrysectionofonepilotholeonthisproject.Undertheguidanceofthetheoreticalandnumericalsimulationresults,theQinRivercrossingprojectwassuccessfullycompleted.
