0Introduction(1)Indiahasemergedasoneofthefastestgrowingeconomyintheworld.Itisrecognizedthatmodernisationofinfrastructure-transportation,powerandtelecommunication-holdsthekeytoattainthishigherGDP.Itisalsowellacknowledgedthatgoodandefficienttransportinfrastructureisanessentialpre-requisitefortheeconomicgrowthofanation.InIndianscenario,transportsectorasawholecontributesabout5.5％totheGDP,withroadtransportcontributingthelion'sshare.RoadInfrastructure,becauseofitseasyaccessibility,flexibilityinoperation,doortodoorserviceandreliabilityoccupiesadominantpositioninthetransportationsystem.InIndia,roadtransporthasregisteredtremendousgrowthinthelastfewdecadesandhasbecomethemostpreferredmodeoftransport.Theshareofroadtransportincarryingthepassengersandgoodsis90％and65％ofthetotalpassengerandfreightmovementrespectively.
