IncountriessuchasIndiaandchina,thereisincreasedfocusonshiftingpeopletopublictransportfrompersonalvehicles.Inspiteofextensiveefforts,personalvehiclesarestillthepreferred,primarymodeoftransportinlargeurbanareasinthesecountries.Thepresentpaperreportsresultsfromapartofourongoingstudytounderstandwhatdrivescommuterpreferenceforpersonalvehiclesandwhatcanbedonetomakepublictransportanattractivealternativeoption.HerewelookathowcommutersinTirupati,acityinthesouthernIndianstateofAndhraPradesh,viewtheavailablepublictransport,whichisprimarilyacitybusservice.Tirupatiisamajorpilgrimageandculturalcenter,withoneofthemost-visitedplacesofworshipintheworld.Tirupatiproperhasapopulationofabout300,000,whichrisestoalittleover450,000iftheurbanizedareasaroundthecityareincluded.ThefocusofthecurrentstudywasrestrictedtotheresidentsofTirupatiwhousethebusserviceforgoingtoworkorschool.Asmallrepresentativesampleofbususerswasselectedandtheywereaskedtoratethebusserviceonattributessuchasfrequency,traveltime,punctuality,price,cleanliness,staffbehaviour,seatavailability,busstopsecurity,safetyfromaccidents,busstopcondition,routeandscheduleinformationavailableatbusstops,onboardsecurity,andbuscomfort.TheobjectiveofthisstudywastogainanunderstandingoftheoverallcustomersatisfactionwithbustransportinTirupati,andtoinvestigatewhichservicequalityattributesmostinfluencethelevelofcustomersatisfactioninthebustransportationfacilitiesprovided.TheresultsarethencomparedwiththeguidelinesonevaluatingtransitperformancedevelopedbytheTransitCooperativeResearchProgramoftheUSTransportationResearchBoard,andwithparametersbasedonsurveysconductedbyagenciesinSingaporeandintheEU.Thepurposeofthiscomparisonistoidentifyanysimilaritiesanddifferencesduetodifferenteconomicandculturalcontext,andseewhatchangescanbemadetomakepublictransitamoreattractivechoiceinIndia.
