Historically,newundergroundutilitypipelineshavetypicallybeeninstalledbytraditionalopen-cutmethods,whichsometimesresultsinenvironmentalimpactsordamagetoexistinginfrastructuresuchasroadwaysandothersurfacestructures.Furthermore,open-cutconstructionpossesseschallengesforinstallingpipelinesbeneathwaterbodiessuchasriversandlakes.HorizontalDirectionalDrilling(HDD)providesamethodforinstallingundergroundutilitypipelinesinconditionswhereopen-cutmethodsareunsuitable.TheadoptionofHDDhasincreasedoverthepastdecade,asnewpipelinesarebeinginstalledincrowdedurbanareas.Subsequently,researchershavesoughttodevelopbasicengineeringtheoreticalmodelsandtechnologicalinnovationstofurtherincreaseitsadoption.Thispaperprovidesastate-of-the-artreviewandevaluationontrendsinthetheoreticaldevelopmentofpullbackloads,boreholestabilityandboreholemudpressureestimationmodels.InnovativetechniquesandnewpipematerialsarediscussedthathaveservedtoexpandthetechnologicalenvelopeofHDD.
