Theroadalignmentplanningprocessisaverycomplexandtimeconsumingtask.Thefinalalignmentselectedduringtheplanninganddesignprocesscouldhavemajorimpactsonprojectconstructionandlife-cycleoperationcosts.Itiswellrecognisedthatthegreatestopportunitiestocontainoverallcostsandminimiseenvironmentalandsocialimpactsareduringtheplanningstage.Traditionally,routeselectionhasreliedheavilyonplanners'professionalexperienceandjudgement.Theincreasingenvironmentalandconstructioncostconcernhavemadetherouteselectionprocessmorecomplexthaneverbefore.Thelackofpurpose-specifictoolshasgreatlylimitedtheplanner'scapacitytoconsiderallthedataandthenumerousconstraintsandtocompareandanalyseallviablealternativeswithinalimitedtimeperiod.Anintelligentroadplanningtoolhasbeenspecificallydevelopedtoaddressthecomplexplanningproblem.Theplanningtoolbeginswithadigitalterrainmodelofthestudyareaandotherrelevantgeographicalinformation,andthenbydefiningtheinputparameterssuchasdesignstandardsandcostparameterssuchascut/fillrateandbridge/tunnelunitcostsandotherconstraintssuchasavoidzonesandcrossingrequirements,theplanningtoolwillautomaticallysearchallpossiblealternativealignmentswithinthestudyarea.Unlikethetraditionalplanningapproach,itexploresmillionsofalternativesandquicklyreturnsarangeof3Dalignmentmodelswithautomatedearthworks;structuressuchasbridges,tunnelsattached,andassociatedvolumesandcostscalculated.Theprocesscanbeoperatediterativelywithnewconstraintsaddedduringtheplanningprocesswhichcanprovideaswiftresponsetopublicfeedbackandre—evaluatealternativeswithinhoursinsteadofweeksandmonths.Italsoempowersplannersanddesignerstominimisethenegativeenvironmentalandsocialimpactsofroadprojects,whilstreducingconstructionandlife-cycleoperationcosts.Whentheprojectapproachestheconstructionphase,itcanalsobeusedasavaluableengineeringtooltorefinethefinalalignmentwithinthecorridor,orjustperformaverticaloptimisationtoreduceearthworksandotherconstructioncosts.Thispaperillustrateshowtheintelligentroadplanningtoolcanshortentheplanningtime,increaseproductivityandreduceprojectcost,whilstachievingresultsthathavelowerenvironmentalandcommunityimpactthantraditionalmethods.Anumberofcasestudiesarepresentedtodemonstratetheinnovativeplanningprocessanditsadaptabilitytodifferentprojectneedssuchaslow-grademountainousroadsandhighstandardstatefreeways.
