Theinfluencefromtheswaymotionofthesmalltowingshipontheunderwatertowedsystemshouldbeconsideredwhentheunderwatermissionsandtasksaretobefinishedsafelyandsuccessfully.Inthispaper,anumericalapproachispresentedwhichfocusesonthehydrodynamicperformanceandmotionofthecablewithouttowedbodyunderthepureswayconditionofthetowingship.Firstly,athree-dimensionaldynamicsmodelfortheflexiblecableisbuiltbasedonthelump-massandspringmethod.Inthemodel,thecableisdiscretizedintoafiniteamountofelementsandtheeffectoftheflowistakenintoaccount.DynamicequationissolvedbytheRunge-Kuttamethod.Theappropriatetimestepisselectedtocalculatethedynamictensionandmotionresponseofthecableunderdifferentflowspeedsanddifferentswayfrequenciesofthetowingship.Theresultsshowthat,intheswayconditionofthetowingshipwiththeflow,themotionresponsesofthecablearecomplex,andbothflowspeedsandswayfrequenciesaffectdynamicperformanceandattituderemarkably.Whentheflowrategrows,thetensionofthecabledecreases.Whentheswayfrequencyincreases,thetensionatthetopofthecableincreases,andthepositionoftheendpointchangesdrastically.
