Asanalternativepipematerial,DuctileIronPipe(DIP)hasbeenmoreandmorewidelyusedinHorizontalDirectionalDrilling(HDD)foritsexcellentmechanicalperformanceandcorrosionresistance.Thelimitedcapacityofrestrainedjointstowithstandpullingforceseverelyconstrainsitsapplicationinlong-distancecrossingprojects.TheFinite-ElementMethod(FEM)wasemployedtostudythefailuremechanismofrestrainedjointsaswellastheimpactofslopeangle,baseduponwhichanapproximatesolutionwasdevelopedtocalculatethemaximumpullcapacityofrestrainedjoints.Itwasshownthatthejointfailurestartedfromthespigotandanappropriateincreaseofslopeanglecouldimprovethejoint'smaximumpullcapacity.Consideringthepipeangulardeflection,anewpullbackloadestimationmodelwasestablishedanditsaccuracywasverifiedbyaHDDrivercrossingproject.
