WiththeLimitsandMeasurementMethodsforEmissionsfromLight-dutyVehicles(CHINA6)issued,theOEMsneedtomeetthenewlegislationinChinesemarketinthefuture.Forcost-sensitivemarketsegment,theturbochargedportfuelinjection(TPFI)SIengineisstillasuitableselection.InordertoreducethesootemissionsofTPFIenginesfurther,itisnecessarytounderstandthemixturepreparationprocess,combustionprocessandthesootformationmechanisms.Inthispaper,opticaldiagnosticswasusedtoobservechargemotion,mixingandcombustionprocessesofaTPFIengine,withopticalaccesstoboththeintakemanifoldandthecom-bustionchamber.Theresultsshowthatwallwettingandfuelfilmstripatomizationaswellasflowbackwereobservedinthefuel-airmix-ingprocessatpartialload,anditdidn'tcausesootemissionseriously.However,athighload,themixingqualityintheintakeportbe-comesunsatisfactory,spray-wallimpingementandwallwettingbecomeexacerbate,andthefuelfilmmotionanddepositionin-creased.Throughthein-cylindervisualization,it'sfoundthatalargenumberofliquidfueldropletsenterthecylinderwiththevalveopened,andthevalvegapandsparkpluggapareaaccumulatesalargenumberoffuelfilm.Whenthecombustionprocesscarriedout,diffusionflameswhichassociatedwithsootformationcanbeobserved.Thesootemissionmainlysourcedfromtheareaofvalveandsparkpluggap.
