Accordingtothereportonaccidentalstatisticaldata,about1214roadcrashesoccureverydayonroad,whichtakesa-bout17livesonanaverageeveryhour.About54.1percentofpersonskilledinroadaccidentswereinthe15-34yearsagegroupduringthelastyear.Trucksandbusesareinvolvedinabout70%offatalcrashesinbothruralandurbanareaswithunderrunningofsmallerve-hicleslikepassengercars.Thereforedesignofunderrunprotectiondeviceplaysanimportantroleinsafetyofpartnervehicle.Alsoemis-sionnormsarebecomingstringentdaybydayandlimitinggreenhousegasesemissionslikeCO2mainlydependsuponfueleconomyandhenceonoverallgrossweightofvehicle.CombinedweightofUnderrunprotectiondeviceslikeRUPD(RearUnderrunProtectionDe-vice),SUPD(SideUnderrunProtectionDevice)andFUPD(FrontUnderrunProtectionDevice)makeslargerpartofgrossvehicleweightofheavycommercialvehicles.TheobjectiveofthisworkistodesignandoptimizeunderrunprotectiondevicesRUPD,FUPD&SUPDforcommercialvehiclewhichsatisfysafetyrecruitmentsofstandards.Variousbeamcrosssectionswithdifferentparameterssuchasbeamthickness,supportbracketthicknessandsupportinclinationanglesareconsidered.ModellingofunderrunprotectiondevicesisdoneinCREO2.0toolandsimulationcarriedoutbyusingANSYS15softwarepackage.Resultsshowtheoptimumstrengthwithreduc-tionofweightandcostofunderrunprotectiondevices.
