Toimprovevehiclehandlingperformance,variablesteeringratiocontrolstrategyforasteer-by-wiresystemisproposed.Thesteeringratioiscompensatedbyacompensatingcoefficient,whichisanonlinearfunctionofvehiclelongitudinalspeed.Threedesignprinciplesbasedonratiolimitation,yawrategainandsteeringsensitivityarepresented.Quadrasticcostfunctionsofvehiclelateraldeviation,steeringangularspeed,lateralaccelerationandrollangleareintegratedasanobjectiveevaluationindex.Basedonthisevaluationindex,doublelane-changesimulationsareconductedtoobtaintheproposedrelationshipbetweensteeringratioandvehiclespeed.Totestandvalidatetheeffects,aseriesofcomparativesimulationexperimentsareconducted,includingstepinputtest,doublelane-changetest,weavetest,andcomprehensivedrivingmaneuver.Theresultsdemonstratethatcomparedwithaconventionalsteeringsystemwithfixedsteeringratio,theproposedsystemcannotonlyimprovevehicledirectionalresponseperformance,butalsoreducedriver'sworkloadincontrollingthevehicle.
