Inthispaper,abriefhistoricreviewofautomotivebuffetingresearchismade,includingearlystudyfromthemiddleofthelastcentury,the“BuffetingRush”periodatthebeginningofthenewmillenniumandtheconsecutive“HotTopic”decadeinChina.Bysearchingandcategorizingpublishedpapers,itiseasytorecognizethatcomputationalmethodbecomesmoreandmoreimportantforbuffetingresearch.Inthemeantime,severalcommercially-availableCFDsoftwarepackagesarecomparedontechnical-suitabilityandfinancial-affordabilityforbuffetingresearchers.Moreover,togetbetterunderstandingofbuffetingmechanism,fourbuffeting-relatedconceptsinfluidmechanicsarediscussed.TheprocedureofCFDsimulationforbuffeting,developedinChryslerduringthe“BuffetingRush”period,isdescribedandsomeexamplesofcomparisonwithwindtunnelexperimentsarelistedtovalidatethesimulationprocedure.Then,severalmethodsareproposedforbuffetingreductionbasedonbuffetingmechanism.Finally,futureperspectiveofbuffetingresearchisaddressed.
