Steer-by-wire(SBW)systemhasnomechanicallinkagebetweensteeringwheelandsteeringgear.Itcanimprovethehandingstability,passivesafetyandcomfortofvehicles.However,thefailureofSBWsystemcancausehazarddrivingsituations,sohowtoensureitssafetyhasalwaysbeenoneoftherestrictingfactors.Thepaperwillcomeupwithadual-redundancyarchitectureofSBWsystem,whichconsistsoffourdual-redundancysubsystems,theyaredual-redundancypowersupplysubsystem,dual-redundancysteer-ingwheelsubsystem,dual-redundancysteeringgearsubsystemanddual-redundancycommunicationnetworksubsystem.FaultTreeAnal-ysis(FTA)andMonteCarlomethodareusedtobuildthemathematicalmodelforcalculatingthehardwarereliabilityindexesofthedu-al-redundancySBWsystemproposed,thereliabilityindexesincludedegreeofreliability,meantimebetweenfailures(MTBF)andfailurerate.Comparetheseindexeswithexistinginternationalstandardstocheckifitissafeenough.Thencomparedual-redundancySBWsystemwithpart-redundancySBWsystemandbasicSBWsystemtoindicatethatonlybyusingwholeredundancycanSBWsystemgetenoughsafetyreliability.TheseaspectsareimplementedcomputationallywithMatlab.
