SequestrationofPhosphorusfromWastewaterbyCementbasedorAlternativeCementitiousMaterials.pdf
Cement-basedandalternativecementitiousmaterialsweretestedinthelaboratoryfortheircapabilityofremovingphosphatefromwastewater.TheresultsdemonstratedthatbothLangmuirandFreundlichadsorptionisothermsweresuitablefordescribingtheadsorptioncharacteristicsofthesematerials.Amongthefourtypesoffiltermediatested,thecement-basedmortarAhasthehighestvalueofmaximumadsorption(30.96mgg-1).TheP-bondingenergy(KL)andadsorptioncapacity(K)exhibitedapositivecorrelationwiththetotalcontentofA1203andFe203ineachmortar.ThemaximumamountofPadsorbed(Qm)andadsorptionintensity(1/n)exhibitedapositivecorrelationwiththeCaOcontentineachmortar.Forthreeofthem,theP-removalrateswereinexcessof94percentforphosphorusconcentrationsrangingfrom20to1000mgL-1.Theunderlyingmechanismswereexaminedusingfieldemissionscanningmicroscopy(FESEM),coupledwithenergy-dispersiveX-rayspectroscopy(EDX)andX-raypowderdiffraction(XRD).Theresultsrevealthattheremovalofphosphatepredominantlyfollowedaprecipitationmechanisminadditiontoweakphysicalinteractionsbetweenthesurfaceofadsorbentfiltermediaandthemetallicsaltsofphosphate.Theuseofcement-basedoralternativecementitiousmaterialsintheformofgroundpowdershowsgreatpromisefordevelopingacost-effectiveandenvironmentallysustainabletechnologyforP-sequestrationandforwastewatertreatment.
