Althoughpermeablepavementsarebecomingincreasinglycommonforstormwatermanagementacrosstheworld,theyaremostlyusedinparkinglots,basicaccessstreets,recreationareas,andlandscapedareas,allofwhichcarryverylight,slowmovingtraffic.Onlyverylimitedresearchhasbeenundertakenonthemechanisticdesignandlong-termperformancemonitoringofpermeablepavementscarryinghighertrafficvolumesandheavierloads,andpreviousworkhasfocusedprimarilyonpermeablepavementswithopen-graded(porous)asphaltor(pervious)portlandcementconcretesurfacing.Verylittleresearchhasbeenundertakenonthebehaviorofpermeableinterlockingconcretepavementasasurfaceandstructuretosupportmoreheavytrucks.Tounderstandhowpermeableinterlockingconcretepavements(PICP)performunderheavytrafficloading,aresearchprojectwasconductedattheUniversityofCaliforniaPavementResearchCenter(UCPRC)withfundingfromtheinterlockingconcretepavementindustry.Theresultsofthisprojectwereusedtodevelopamechanistic-empirical(M-E)designmethodforPICP.Thismethodisbasedonmechanisticanalysisandwaspartiallyvalidatedwithacceleratedpavementtesting(APT)results.ThispaperpresentsasummaryofthestructuralperformanceofPICPunderheavytrafficloadingwithaHeavyVehicleSimulator(HVS).TheresultsincludetheruttingperformanceofPICPsectionswiththreedifferentthicknessesofsubbaselayer(reservoirlayer)underdry,wetanddrainedconditionsandwithdifferentloadlevels.Therutdevelopmentwithloadingrepetitionsinthesurface,baseandsubgradelayersisdiscussed.
