Inordertonondestructivetestthepermeabilitycoefficientofhotmixasphalt(HMA)pavementsfast,Amethodologyforassessingthepermeabilitycoefficientwasproposedbyinfrareddifferentialthermaltestingofpavementafterrain.TherelationshipbetweenpermeabilitycoefficientandairvoidsofHMAspecimendetermined.Finiteelementmethod(FEM)modelswerebuilttocalculatethesurfacetemperaturedifferencewithdifferentexposuretimeafterprecipitation.Simulatedsolarradiationsourceandfullysaturatedplatespecimensweresettledinlaboratory,testsverifythatthedifferentexposuretimethespecimensurfacetemperaturedifference.Infrareddifferentialthermaldetectionpermeablepavementhardwareandcorrespondingsoftwaredeveloped.Basedonalargenumberoftestresults,theevaluationindexandcriteriaofpermeabilitycoefficientofHMApavementstestedbyinfrareddifferentialthermalweredeveloped.Theresuitsshowedthat:ThereiscorrelationbetweenairvoidsandpermeabilitycoefficientofHMAspecimen.PermeabilitycoefficientofHMApavementscanbedeterminedbydifferentsurfacetemperatureatdifferentexposuretime.9:00am-14:00pmisthebesttimetodetectpermeabilitycoefficientbyinfrareddifferentialthermalNDT.Permeableasphaltpavementpermeabilitycanbeachievedbyinfrareddetectorquicklyandcontinuously,alanetesting;Accordingtothepermeableassessmentcriteria,in-placepavementspermeabilitycoefficientscanbeaccuratelyevaluated.
