Environmentalissuesarebecomingincreasinglyimportantinthedomestic,businessandpublicsectors.Duetopopulationgrowthandgrowingnumberofmegacities,GreenPublicProcurementsconceptsisalsobecominganincreasingtrendintheroadinfrastructuresector.Thisstudyassessedtheenvironmentalimpactsofroadmarkingsconsideringthewholelifecyclefrommanufacturingtodisposal.Fortheaccuracyofthestudy,anexternalexpertpanelhasreviewedtheassessment.ByusingtheLCC-(basedonDINEN60300)andLCA-Methodology(basedonISO14040andfollowing),anobjectivecomparisonforthefollowingsprayedlinemarkingswasperformed:Solvent-bornepaint;Water-basedpaint;ThermoplasticandThermoSprayPlastic;MMAColdPlasticandMMAColdSprayPlastic.Typicalmaterialformulationsincharacteristicapplicationscenarioshavebeenmodelledusingthedataofcorrespondingofficialapprovaltestcertificatesheldbyamajorlocalmanufacturerofallevaluatedtechnologies.Empiricaldatawasusedtodetermineatypicalservicelifeofthevariousroadmarkingsystemsatatypicalaveragedailytrafficof10000-15000vehiclesperday.Thelifecycleassessmentresults,i.e.consideringthewholelifecyclefrommanufacturingtodisposal,showthataglobalwarmingpotentialreductionofmorethan50%canbeachievedwithamoredurableroadmarkingsystem.Thestudyconcludedthatinordertoaccesstheactualenvironmentalimpactofroadmarkings,alifetimeevaluationincluding,forinstance,production,application,transport,servicelife,anddisposalmustbetakenintoconsideration.
