TheKID-SHELLprojectaimstodesignanddevelopaprotectionsystemaddressedtochildrenwhoaretravellingasPTWpassengers,sincemotorcyclesarebyfarthemostdangerousmeansoftransport.Moreover,childrenareespeciallyvulnerableduetotheirinstabilityonthemotorbikeandtheirphysicalweaknesswithregardtotheimpact,reflexesandreactiontotheaccident.TheEuropeanCommissionisnotawareofanyspecificnationalstandardintheMemberStates,apartfromrequiringtheuseofhelmetsbymotor-cycledriversandpassengers.Thefirststageofthisprojectanalysedtheprincipalcharacteristicsoftrafficaccidentsinvolvingchildmotorcyclepassengersandwhatinjuriestheysuffer.Bothurbanandnon-urbanareaswereconsidered,aswellasthetypeofaccidentscenario,typeofaccident.actionsofthepassengerandinjuriessufferedbychildPTWpassengers.Also,thedatagatheredwasnotonlybyfrequency,butalsobyseverity.ThestudyincludedstatisticsanddataofmotorcycleaccidentsinBarcelonaandtheproblemsspecifictochildrenasmotorcyclepassengers,includingastudyofhowthedifferentstagesofchilddevelopmentaffectanaccident.Theaimofthesecondstageoftheprojectwastodefinethedesignofthechildprotectionsystemanddevelopanassessmentprotocol.Adesign,theKID-SHELL,wasmadewhichcoveredthemostexposedpartsofthechildpassengerinaPTWsuchastheback,neckandshoulders.Thesystemisadjustable,beingabletobeusedbetween7and12years;itisaone-piecevestwitharigidbackparttoprotectthechildincaseoffallingfromthemotorcycleoranaccident.ThetestdevelopedaimstoevaluatethelevelofsafetyoftheKID-SHELLprotectorandatthesametimebeabletoreproducetherealcasescenarioswheretheKID-SHELLmaybeinvolvedsuchas:falldownabrasion,backfalldown.lateralfalldown,asphaltsliding.Theenergyabsorptionthatthissystemneedstoprovideintheeventofanimpactwasevaluatedandatestprotocolwasdefinedconsistentwithit.Thedummies,impactors,setupandrequirementspecificationsforthetestwerespecified.Furthermore,apatternofthetargetzoneswheretheimpactorhastocollideweredefined,InordertomakethetestrepeatableandreproducibleitwascarriedoutbytheDynamicImpactTestSystem(DITS).Concerningtheresults,threelevelsofqualificationwerespecifiedinordertoassesstheKID-SHELLsystemprotection.
