Thefifthwheellocationhasadirectlyeffectonthevehicleperformance,includingtheridecomfort,handlingstabilityandfuelconsumption.Thispaperaimsatstudyingtheeffectoffifthwheellocationonhandlingstabilitybycombiningthetheoryanalysisandsimulation.Asimplifiedmodeltocalculateaxleloadswasestablishedinfirstandverifiedbysimulating.Theanalysisresultshaveshownthattheaxleloadsof1st,4th,5thand6thareincreasingalongwiththefrontoffsetoffifthwheelwhiletheaxleloadsof2ndand3rdaredecreasing.Further,thehandlingstabilityisevaluatedbyconsideringtheoncenterhandling,stablesteer,steerreturnabilityandsteerhandiness.Andtheresultsdenotethatincreasingthefrontoffsetwillimprovethehandlingstabilityonthewhole.
