Theformationofmartensiteduringthepropagationoffatiguecracksinpearliticrailsteel.pdf
Squatisakindofrailheaddefectsrelatedtorollingcontactfatigue(RCF),andregardedasapotentialsafetyhazardinrailwaynetworks.Themechanismsofsquatinitiationandpropagationremainunclearlyunderstood.Inthecurrentstudy,severalbranchesofsubsurfacecracksinsidesquatdefectshadbeenintensivelyinvestigatedforunderstandingthedevelopmentofRCFcracks.Frommetallographicobservations,afewwhiteetchingparticleswereclearlyfoundeitherlocatedwithincrackgapsorattachedwithcrackfaces.Basedonnanoindentationmeasurements,thehardnessofwhiteparticleswashigherthanthatinmatrix,presentingapossiblemechanicalpropertyofmartensite.Alargedensityofnano-twinsinthesubstructureofwhiteparticlescanbeidentifiedinthetransmissionelectronmicroscopybright-fieldimaging.TheircorrespondingselectedareaelectrondiffractionpatternsprovedwhiteparticlesasFe-Cmartensitewithbody-centeredtetragonalcrystallographicstructure.Besidesthemartensite,arandomdistributionofoxidizedsulphideinclusions(MnS)werefoundincludedinwhiteetchingparticlesaswellbytheenergy-dispersivex-rayspectroscopyanalyses.Thediscoveryofmartensitictransformationandsulphideinclusions(MnS)inthecrackofsquatdefectsrevealsanacceleratedfailuremechanismwhichwouldbedetrimentaltooperationsafety.Itisnecessarytopaymoreattentionssothattheriskoffatiguefailurescanbeminimized.
