Inthiswork,wepresentrecentadvancesonthecreationofdata-drivenmodelstoaddresstheneedsoftransportationplannersduringtheconception,understandingandmaintenanceoftransportnetworks.Morespecifically,wepresentdata-drivenmodelstounderstandandanalysemobilityandtosimulateandpredicttheimpactofchangesinexistingnetworks.Thisnewmodellingapproachleveragesthemassiveamountofdatacollectedinthefieldfromdailyusers'transactionsandsensors'outputs,andproposestouseinamoreextensivewaymachinelearningtechniquesthathaveemergedoverthelastdecade.First,wepresenthowthisnewtransportationmodellingapproachdiffersfromtraditionalpractices.Wethenillustratethisapproachthroughsomespecificusecaseswhereithasbeenappliedandpresentthepreliminaryresultswehaveobtained.Wefinallyendupwithadiscussionhighlightingboththemainadvantagesandthehighpotentialofadoptingsuchanapproachinthetransportationplanningdomainandalsothemainobstaclestobeovercomebeforealargeadoptioncanhappen.
