Humanthermaladaptationanditspotentialeffectonindoorthermalenvironmentdesignhavedrivenresearcherstoexplorethemechanismunderpinningacclimatization.Alargenumberofstudieshaveverifiedhumanheatacclimatizationandacclimationtotemperaturewhereasfewstudiesfocusontheacclimationtohumidity.Torevealwhetherpeoplewithshort-termexposurehaveacclimationtoextremehumidityinhotenvironmentsandhowtheacclimationaffectpeople'thermalperception,acomparativeexperimentwithhot-humid(32℃-80%RH)andhot-dry(32℃-20%RH)wasconductedinawell-controlledclimatechamber,withbothphysiologicalmeasurementsandpsychologicalquestionnaires.Totally24subjectswereinvolvedinthecontinuous7-daysrepeatedexposuretohumidstimuli.Despitethenon-significantdifferenceofsubjects'meanskintemperature(MST)betweentwohumiditylevels,theresultsshowedthatthechangerateofMSTincreasedattheinitial30minduringthe7-dayexposure,indicatingtherapidresponsesandthermoregulationtohot-humidstimuliafteracclimation.Thesubjects'bloodflow,andsweatinglosswerebothaffectedbyhumidityandheatacclimation.Subjects'thermalperceptionswerecloselyrelatedtothephysiologicalresponses.Thechangetrendofsubjects'thermalsensationwasinconsistentwithMSTduringthe7-dayexposure,decreasingupto0.5under32℃-80%RH.Thesefindingsdemonstratedtheheatacclimationdifferencestohighandlowairhumiditythroughrepeatedshort-termexposure,whichcanbereservedasareferencetoindoorthermalenvironmentdesigntakingintoconsiderationpeoplelong-termacclimatizationtohot-humidenvironments.
