CauseandpredictabilityfortheseverehazepollutionindowntownBeijinginNovemberDecember2015.pdfBasedonthehourlyPM2.5concentrations,meteorologicalvariablerecordsandERA-Interimreanalysisdata,aseriesofdiagnosticanalyseswereconductedtoexplorethepossiblemeteorologicalcausesfortheseverehazepollutionthatoccurredinBeijinginNovember-December2015.Usingtheonline-coupledWRF-ChemmodelandGFSdata,thepredictabilityofhourlyanddailyPM2.5concentrationswasevaluated.Theresultsshowedthat,inthecontextofpollutantemission,theseverehazepollutionindowntownBeijinginNovember-December2015wasprimarilyattributedtoanomalouslocalmeteorologicalconditions,whichwerecausedandstrengthenedbyanomalouslarge-scaleatmosphericcirculations.Theabnormalchangesintheuppertroposphereappearedtotriggertheanomaliesinthemiddle-lowertroposphereandthelocalconditions.ThenumericalsimulationscancapturethespatialdistributionpatternsofthePM2.5concentrationsforpredictionsof1to10daysinadvance.ThePM2.5concentrationtrendsindowntownBeijingweregenerallyconsistentwiththepredictionsonbothdailyandhourlytime-scales,althoughthepredictabilitydecreasedgraduallyastheleadtimesprolonged.ThepredictabilityofthedailymeanPM2.5concentrationwasslightlyhigherthanthatofthehourlyconcentration.ThestatisticalindicessuggestedthatthepredictionsofdailyandhourlymeanPM2.5concentrationsweregenerallyskillfulandreliableformaximumleadtimesof8and5days,respectively.
